How to Choose a Marketing Agency in Edmonton

How to choose a marketing agency in Edmonton: what agencies really charge, the red flags to watch for, the questions to ask before you sign and what to expect.

Edmonton has dozens of marketing agencies. Many charge $1,500 or more a month, lock you into a contract and hand you to an account manager who has never run a business. The right agency grows your revenue. The wrong one burns months of budget and leaves you worse off than doing nothing.

Here is how to tell them apart before you sign.

What marketing agencies in Edmonton actually charge

These are the numbers few agencies put on their website:

Agency typeMonthly costTypical contract
Full service agency (downtown)$3,000 to $10,00012 months
Digital marketing agency$1,500 to $4,0006 to 12 months
Social media only agency$800 to $2,0003 to 6 months
Freelancer or solo operator$500 to $1,500Month to month
OnePoint Solutions$300 to $600No contract

And by service, for a small business:

ServiceTypical range
Website (full build)$500 to $10,000
SEO (monthly)$300 to $1,500
Social media management (monthly)$300 to $1,000
Google Ads management (monthly)$300 to $800 plus ad spend
Branding and logo$500 to $3,000

The gap is not always quality. Often it is overhead. Big offices, large teams and sales departments get passed on to you, and that does not make your Instagram posts any better. Be careful with prices far below these ranges too, because corners get cut somewhere.

What a marketing agency should offer

At a minimum, an Edmonton marketing agency should cover:

  • SEO. This is how people find you on Google. Local SEO matters most here: showing up in Google Maps when someone searches “dentist near me” or “auto shop Sherwood Park”. A good agency manages your Google Business Profile, builds local citations, writes content and tracks your rankings every month.
  • Social media management. Content, scheduling, posting and replies across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and your Google Business Profile.
  • Website development. Your website works for you around the clock. It should load fast, look right on a phone and be built for search from day one, not a template with your logo dropped in.
  • Paid ads, when they make sense. Google and Meta ads can work, but they waste money without good targeting. A good agency tells you when ads are not worth it for your business.

Red flags when choosing an agency

Long contracts with no way out. If an agency needs 12 months before it can prove anything, that is a problem. Good work keeps clients without a legal requirement. Contracts protect the agency, not you.

They cannot show real results. Ask for examples or references from local businesses like yours. Case studies from national brands do not apply to a shop on 124 Street. If they dodge the question, walk away.

They cannot explain the work in plain language. A pitch full of phrases like “synergistic omnichannel engagement” and short on specifics usually means there is no clear plan. You should understand exactly what you are paying for.

Vague reporting. “We will send you a monthly report” means nothing if the report is a wall of numbers. Ask what it includes. You want traffic, rankings, calls or bookings, explained simply.

They guarantee page one rankings. Nobody can guarantee a spot on Google. Anyone who does is either not telling the truth or using tactics that will hurt your site later.

They outsource everything. Some agencies resell overseas freelance work at a big markup. Distributed teams are fine, but you should know who is actually working on your account.

You never talk to the person doing the work. Account managers slow everything down and cost you money. You should be able to reach whoever runs your SEO and social.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will be my point of contact? You want one person who knows your account, not a rotating cast of junior staff.
  2. Can I see results for businesses like mine? Ask for local, small business examples.
  3. What happens in the first 30 days? A good agency has a clear onboarding plan. If they cannot describe month one, they are making it up as they go.
  4. How do you measure success? The answer should tie to your goals: more calls, more bookings, more people through the door. Not impressions or follower counts.
  5. What happens if I want to cancel? You should be able to leave with reasonable notice and take your accounts, content and data with you.
  6. Do I own my website and content? Some agencies build on their own platform, so you lose everything if you leave. Make sure your domain, hosting, content and accounts are yours.

What good agencies deliver

  • Published pricing. You should know what things cost before a sales call. Hidden pricing usually means they charge whatever they think you will pay.
  • A written plan. Before money changes hands, you should see what will be done, when, and what to expect. Not a glossy deck full of stock photos.
  • Plain monthly reports. One page that shows what was done, what moved and what is next. If you cannot understand the report, it is not doing its job.
  • Your assets stay yours. Website, domain, content, social accounts and Google Business Profile all belong to you. A good agency works inside your accounts, not theirs.
  • Fast replies. If it takes three days to answer an email, they have too many clients or yours is not a priority. A reply within one business day should be normal.
