We’ve audited hundreds of Edmonton business websites at this point. The same mistakes keep showing up — and they’re costing real money in lost leads. The good news is most of them are fixable in a week or less.
Here are the five we see most often.
1. Ignoring Google Business Profile
A surprising number of Edmonton businesses either haven’t claimed their Google Business Profile or set it up once and never touched it again. Your GBP is often the first thing people see when they search for you — and Google uses it heavily for local map pack rankings.
The fix:
- Claim and verify your profile if you haven’t
- Fill out every single field — hours, services, description, attributes
- Add real photos (not stock) at least once a month
- Post weekly updates — promotions, tips, news
- Respond to every review, good or bad
A fully active GBP can be the difference between showing up in the map pack and being invisible.
2. No Location Signals on the Website
Your website might look great, but if it never mentions Edmonton, Alberta, or the neighbourhoods you serve, Google has no reason to rank you for local searches. We see this constantly — beautiful websites with zero geographic relevance.
The fix:
- Include your city and service area in your homepage title tag and H1
- Mention Edmonton naturally throughout your service pages
- Add your full address in the footer
- Create content that references local areas — blog posts about Edmonton-specific topics
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your address and service area
You don’t need to stuff “Edmonton” into every sentence. But it should be clear to both humans and Google where you operate.
3. Slow Website Speed
Google has made it clear that page speed is a ranking factor, especially on mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you’re losing both rankings and customers. People don’t wait.
The fix:
- Compress and properly size your images — this is the number one culprit
- Use a modern hosting provider, not a $5/month shared server
- Minimize unnecessary plugins and scripts
- Enable browser caching
- Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights and fix what it flags
A fast site doesn’t just rank better — it converts better. Every second of load time costs you leads.
4. Thin or Missing Content
If your service pages are three sentences and a phone number, Google doesn’t have enough to work with. Search engines need content to understand what you do, who you serve, and why someone should choose you. Thin pages get thin rankings.
The fix:
- Every service page should be at least 400–600 words
- Answer the questions your customers actually ask — pricing, process, timeline, what to expect
- Add a blog and publish at least 2–4 posts per month targeting real search queries
- Internal link between related pages — your blog posts should link to your service pages and vice versa
You don’t need to write novels. But give Google and your customers enough to make a decision.
5. Not Tracking Anything
You can’t improve what you don’t measure. A lot of Edmonton businesses have no idea where their traffic comes from, which pages rank, or whether their SEO is working. They’re flying blind.
The fix:
- Set up Google Search Console — it’s free and shows you exactly what queries you’re appearing for
- Install Google Analytics to track traffic sources and user behaviour
- Check your rankings monthly for your target keywords
- Track leads by source — know whether that phone call came from Google, a referral, or an ad
Even 15 minutes a month reviewing your data will give you better insight than most of your competitors have.
The Common Thread
All five of these mistakes have the same root cause: treating your website as a digital business card instead of a lead generation tool. Your website should be working for you around the clock — pulling in searches, building trust, and converting visitors into customers.
